The Isle of Wight Gundog Club put on a very good show, running a Novice and an Open together. 6 Tests each and (unusually), the Novice and the Open were held separately using different bits of ground and different Tests. Even though some people were running a dog in Novice and a dog in Open, the IoW Team managed to organise the day more efficiently than a military manoeuvre and we were finished in excellent time and all of us managed to catch the early ferry home. How clever is that !! We even arrived home to find the scoresheet had been emailed to us. Amazingly, they even organised a DRY day as the heavens opened on Monday and it’s been raining ever since.
I am not going to describe all the Tests as you would be bored silly by the end of 12. Suffice to say that if you were in the Awards then you did very well indeed. Out of a possible 120 marks, the winner of the Open got 113 and the winner of the Novice got 113. So, room for improvement there you guys !!!!!! Only joking – the judging was tough, top class, Field Trial Level marking, with not much leniency given because it was merely a Working Test. Very well done the Winners, Penny Allanson Bailey and June Bearman.
Other ‘locals’ who did well were Dee Betts and Teasel for a well deserved Second Place in the Novice Test scoring 108. A polished performance under extremely exacting judges. Lindsey Warren (only 3 points behind), and only the second Test that her little girl has competed in, showing just how capable she is. Lindsey must have been over the moon with her 4th place – WOW – one to look out for this Summer !!!!! Sheila Rapley with Opataz Lancelot went home very happy with a score of 100. Beth Rayner with her young dog scored 92 despite a zero in one test.
In the Open, the winner was Perfect Plum who is always happy to oblige providing Penny continues to give her a large dinner and the best bed in the house !!!!! And why not Penny ? But look out Penny, because Rob Smallman’s young dog Viking, is never far behind and was only 3 points away from you ! Di Paterson with her reliable Gus wasn’t far away either and equalled with Beth Rayner’s Scout on 103 points. Nikki Stranks, who has a litter sister of Beth’s Scout was awarded the Gamekeeper’s Choice.
So, looking at the scoresheet, for the Novice. Anyone without a zero was 93 and up but Beth got 92 with a zero, so no disgrace there with all 18’s and a 20! As for the Open, again, anyone without a zero got 92 and up, but Lily Renouf and Sue Chapman were only 2 and 3 marks behind with a zero, so they (with lowest mark of 16), were always in contention.
Always another day and another Test but please do bear in mind that without the Landowners support and all the valuable organisers and helpers, we would not be able to enjoy our ‘day out’ with our dogs. Thank you one and all.
