Gundog Training

Gun dog jumping fence, Gundog training West Sussex, Pulborough, Haslemere, Petworth
Labrador Bee jumping fence with retrieve
Many owners of gun dog breeds don’t intend to work their dogs but find both they and their dogs draw great satisfaction and reward in following the training disciplines of absolute steadiness and controlled hunting and retrieving from which many many generations have been bred.

Whether you plan to shoot over your dog, work him in line, compete in working tests and field trials or simply want to enjoy the gun dog training for your dog’s development and mental stimulation we will find the right class for you.

We hold regular gun dog classes catering for all levels; from first time handlers to the most experienced. For those wanting build up training over the Spring and Summer ready for the shooting season, or to add polish to their already trained gun dog in preparation for competition and also for clients who wish to ‘MOT’ their working dogs a few times a year. From Novice to Field Trial Champion we have the knowledge and the experience to help you get the very best out of your dog

We will go through the whole process of gun dog training, from whistle work, steadiness, quartering, hunting, retrieving, directional work, holding an area, developing memory, working under gunfire, working with cold game and steadiness to live game. Our emphasis is on progress and continuous development of good working dogs. If you want to succeed, we'll show you how!

Final Qualification
Louie receiving the final retrieve of the third day at the International Gundog Championship 2019 with her home bred bitch FTCh Mitforton Onour receiving a much cherished Diploma of Merit.

With 63 of the top dogs in Europe Louie was the only lady handler to have qualified two dogs for the IGL and to have survived the three days to make the 'run off' and this final drive over the lake at Glenalmond. A very proud moment, Onour was the only bitch to make it to the final award ceremony.

Louie has now qualified six times for the International Gundog League Retriever Championships since 2014 with three different dogs; firstly with Bedgebrook Scrumptious and then with her home-bred FTCH Mitforton Nacho and Mitforton Onour

Louie has over thirty years of experience working her dogs on a variety of shoots, in the beating line, at her peg when shooting and picking up. As well as running her own syndicate shoot near Petworth as Leconfield Estate shoot tenant she plays a major part in the picking up team for a number other shoots nearby working several of her dogs at a time.

Access to 1700 acres of lovely ground in the shadow of the South Downs allows opportunity for infinitely varied training; in woodland, heath, pasture; with streams, ditches and lakes for water training.

Not only does she offer gun dog training in diverse and realistic environment Louie can often arrange for “work experience” training on the shoot.

Whilst she holds her own specialist hunting spaniel classes with Trainthatdog Louie is also founder chairman (now President) of the Leconfield Working Spaniel Club based near Petworth. The club encourages handlers of working spaniels to train together with a number of professionals in a positive and friendly environment to prepare their dogs to support the local shooting community.

Gundog working tests are an excellent measure of a gundog's potential in a practical shooting environment. Louie supports the local gundog clubs and encourages her more competitive clients to do the same by taking part in Gundog Working Tests. The disciplines required to succeed in these tests enhance the working relationship between dog and handler and equip both with the necessary skills to perform confidently in the field.
